[^1]: the bell she hears is meant to be the railway crossing bell but it's written as 警鐘 (which can also refer to an alarm clock bell). can she even wake up from this though? the game world is the only world she has...
[^2]: if i were a little bolder I would have changed this line for the last chorus to read "The choices I've made will drive us apart", there's enough ambiguity in the original lyrics to read it that way and it feels in line with ten's character but it does seem a bit too much like I'd be inserting my own interpretation into the text.

Let's get Started

Here I will explain the lyrics and mv for my song "Tenshi no New Game" posted on September 30, 2023. If you haven't watched it yet, please do that first.

People left some very thoughtful comments on the niconico upload so consider leaving comments on if you’d like. I was worried that I might not have conveyed the story very well… But I’m happy to see that so many people got it! I don’t want to ramble on here, so let’s get right into the explanation.

(My main priority with this post is to help people understand the story of this song. I may come back and make another post later going in depth on the production and some extra details.)

Lyrics Explained:

Intro:

No coincidences in love
The choices you’ve made will drive us apart
Make the right moves to capture the piece
Erase all incorrect answers, back to square one So that once more, at this very spot
I’ll fall in love with you again
Pretending not to know, is what you do best
You’ll gently drive the world insane

The initial premise of this song is that it takes place in the world of a dating simulator and the main character, Ten, is one of the love interests.

This first set of lyrics is her dialogue in the game. The game is approaching its ending and she comes to realize that somehow along the way. I won’t go into detail on how exactly this happened but they say love is a kind of “bug” in the brain, and this time that “bug” ended up manifesting in the gameworld too. This frame is designed to look like it's part of a visual novel sequence.

By the way, “There are no coincidences in love'' is a play on “There are no coincidences on purpose.'' (koi 恋/故意 ni guzen wa nai) This is because as a game, all of the romance scenarios are prewritten and chosen by the player. (I’m amazed people noticed this!)

Ten is requesting the player to reset the game here. She doesn’t yet know if her memories of this route will remain, so she’s putting a lot of faith in the player. For the sake of eventually reaching a perfect love she jumps into the railway crossing and triggers a Bad End. She wouldn’t know this but the route she was on was a Good End for her. She just couldn’t see it because her perfectionist nature doesn’t allow her to permit even one wrong flag. Perhaps the bug emerged because her feelings were this strong.

You could say that due to the player’s gentleness she falls in love and her world is driven insane.

A melody, B melody:

As I wake from a terrible dream

The game has been reset now. Her memories of the previous playthrough feel like just a bad dream so she ignores it and gradually falls in love with the player as usual.

Ten falls in love with the player because it feels like he can see right into her heart. Which, of course, he can because he’s already played through these events. This is the face she makes when falling in love... cute.

Chorus:

At this point we’ve reached Ten’s Good End and she experiences a love that is so perfect and fragile it would shatter into pieces the moment you touched it. It can't handle even a single question answered incorrectly.

You can sense a bit of anxiety in the lyrics here and Ten can feel it too. Simply speaking, this is because there is no continuation of the Good End, so Ten’s time here will come to a close soon and the next love interest’s story will start. The player doesn't care about Ten anymore.

2nd A melody, Interlude, C melody:

As I wake from a beautiful dream

And so the game is reset again. This time Ten wakes up from a wonderful dream, but feels like something is missing from her life now. Don’t you think it’s more painful to wake up from a wonderful dream feeling like you’ve lost something important than to wake up from a nightmare?

Then, when Ten sees a player holding hands with another character….

She understands everything all at once. The dreams she’s been having were memories of the Bad End and the Good End, and that we’re now on the third playthrough. So she decides to do something about it…

Final Chorus:

She made the decision to repeat the Bad End forever.

Ten jumps into the railway crossing with the player in her arms in order to force the third playthrough to end. The player looks at her in shock, but she looks back at him and smiles sweetly. It’s not like she isn’t afraid of being run over by the train but her feelings for the player are much stronger right now. A girl in love is a powerful thing…

The Bad End plays on repeat for the rest of the video and the two of them continue to live a nightmare forever… That’s Ten’s perfect love.

Of course this is still just a videogame, if you cut the power it’ll turn off immediately.

The sound of the railway crossing bell is getting further and further away.

Finally:

Although the writing is a bit clumsy, I hope I was able to convey the story properly. I would appreciate if you’d shared any thoughts you have on this article.
