The Billiards Tale of DEFOKO is a 3 part unfinished mmd series created by youtube/niconicodouga user rossi and I love it very dearly. There’s something special about the atmosphere of this one that stands out amongst other mmd cinema. The scenarios leading up to the billiards matches are well scripted if simple, but the real focus is the gameplay that takes up most of the runtime of each episode. It’s so lovingly animated and the matches are almost reverently silent. I can feel the creators passion emanating from these matches to the extent that there’s a sort of disconnect between them and the rest of the story that throws me off balance as much as it endears me.
Although, given the rate of improvement between episodes I feel like if the series had continued longer this disconnect would have eventually faded away. Episode two’s match is already much more narratively interwoven than episode one’s, and episode three’s match is genuinely pretty intense, I felt bad for poor Teto. And I can’t help but mention the strange effect of nakano4’s music that permeates almost every scene of this series, adding a subtle air of melancholy... Whether Defoko is moping around town or betting everything on a single game the backing track is always one of nakano4’s chill, dreamy pop tunes and tonally appropriate or not, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Every once in a while I think about how this series might have matured if it wasn’t aborted so early on, but perhaps I’m a bit of a romantic for falling in love with amateur projects so easily... man we could’ve had UTAU kaiji here and I mourn that, I do
